Face Lift Questions and Answers
WHAT DO I NEED TO AVOID BEFORE A FACELIFT SURGERY?
Preparation is the key to success for any surgery. It is important that you prepare for your surgery like you would for any other life journey. Any medications that can interfere with anesthesia should be avoided or substituted for those that do not interfere with anesthetic drugs and gases. Thus, make sure that you have shared your entire medical and prescription history with your surgeon.
Blood thinners like Coumadin and Plavix need to be discontinued.
Aspirin and Aspirin containing products should be discontinued at least two weeks before surgery.
NSAIDS such as Advil and Ibuprofen should be discontinued at least 10 days before your surgery.
Excessive doses of Vitamin E should be discontinued at least 10 days before surgery. However normal amounts of Vitamin E that are present in multivitamins are OK.
Tanning should be avoided prior to surgery so that your skin is not healing from the tanning effects at the time of surgery.
Facial exfoliations and peels should not be undertaken immediately before surgery.
Avoid experimenting with new makeup lines before your surgery.
HOW SOON AFTER MY FACELIFT SURGERY WILL I BE ABLE TO EXERCISE?
It will depend on your own unique healing. Thus this answer is best given on a case by case basis. Most patients should be able to start resumption of light exercise three weeks after surgery and build up to a full schedule of exercise in six weeks.
WHAT IS THE YOUNGEST AGE THAT YOU WILL PERFORM A FACELIFT?
It is not the age but the need that determines when to perform a facelift. This could be when you are 30 or when you are 50.
There is nothing wrong in doing a minor facelift in a younger age group. Everyone deserves to look their best at any age.
DO HAIRLINES SHIFT AFTER A FACELIFT?
They do. A good surgeon will be able to accomplish a facelift with minimal shifting of the hairline. It is all in the technique.
Avoiding hairline mishaps requires a surgeon who has an instinctive feel for the art of facelifts. With well-planned and executed surgery, hairline shifts will be insignificant and not noticeable.
WHAT IS A MINI FACELIFT?
It is all about the degree of your facelift. Early changes in the face related to aging may be addressed by less invasive surgery than required for a usual facelift. This is then called a mini face lift. This term is however used loosely and it can be misleading. The goal of a facelift is to rejuvenate your facial appearance. This may be accomplished by different shades of the same surgery, from a mini facelift to a limited face lift to a full facelift and all the shades in between.
IS IT POSSIBLE TO LIPOSUCTION THE FACE?
Yes. When indicated liposuction of the face is done. This technique is used to reduce excessive fat deposits on the cheeks and neck.
Liposuction is done as standalone surgery or at the same time as a facelift.
WHAT IS BUCCAL FAT REMOVAL?
Buccal fat is a pocket of well-defined fat in the cheeks. It overlies the buccinator muscle of the face. The buccal fat pad is responsible for causing the appearance of chubby cheeks. The buccal pad fat can be removed to help facial contour. Its removal is done from inside the mouth. Sometimes the buccal fat pad is removed as a separate surgical procedure or it can be combined with a facelift.
I ONLY WANT MY NECK IMPROVED. IS THAT POSSIBLE WITHOUT A FACELIFT?
A neck lift can be done without a facelift.
CAN OTHER SURGERIES BE COMBINED WITH A FACELIFT?
When it is safe to do so, other surgeries such as tummy tucks or breast surgeries can be done at the same time as a facelift. Popular combination procedures include browlifts, blepharoplasties, and filler/fat injections into the face. Such decisions are made based on the patient’s health and nature of the other surgical procedure.
DO PATIENTS EVER NEED A SECOND FACELIFT?
They do. A facelift only corrects aging but does not stop its return. Aging continues after surgery. With the passage of time facial sagging recurs. Another face lift will then be needed.
We recommend having an early facelift and continued touchups as and when needed.
